Ingredients
Method
- Melt Butter: In a large skillet, melt 4 tablespoons of unsalted butter over medium heat.
- Make the Roux: Add 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour to the melted butter. Whisk continuously for 1 minute.
- Add Milk: Slowly pour in 3 cups of whole milk while whisking constantly. Bring to a simmer and let cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
- Add Beef: Stir in the chopped dried beef and 1 teaspoon of fresh black pepper. Cook for an additional 2 minutes until everything is heated through.
- Serve: Taste for salt, adjust if necessary, and spoon generously over freshly toasted bread. Enjoy immediately!
Notes
To reduce the saltiness of the jarred beef, soak the chopped pieces in warm water for 10 minutes, rinse, and pat dry before adding to the sauce.
Feel free to substitute the chipped beef with leftover corned beef or country ham.
